Comfort Food At AMG

At the hospitals of Athens Medical Group, the alimentation process takes place in suitable building facilities, with state-of-the-art equipment in full compliance with the ISO 22000: 2005 Food Safety Management System, which ensures the hygiene and safety of the food. Appropriately trained staff follows the specific international food safety standard, which controls the quality of the food from the raw material producer to the moment the food arrives at the patient’s tray.

At the same time, the body of recipes choices is based on the principles of Greek traditional cuisine and the Mediterranean diet, enriched with touches of modern tasting and style. The menu is based on the concept of comfort food and the goal is for the patient to feel the warmth and the love of homemade food and not just a hospital dish. Particular care is taken for the individualized nutritional choices of each patient, which are always determined by personal experiences and views, in the light of the diet.

Mediterranean Diet At AMG

The value of the Mediterranean diet in improving the human health assessment indicators, is already documented by a multitude of studies, both at national and global level. Particularly important is the positive correlation that occurs with the cardioprotective effect of the Mediterranean diet. Studies from the wider Mediterranean region highlight the action of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances and link it to the positive role they play against cardiometabolic markers.

The main features of this diet are as follows:

  • Frequent eating of high-fiber foods, such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, mulberry bread
  • Balanced consumption of vegetable fats, especially olive oil, as opposed to avoiding consumption of animal fats and especially saturated and trans fats, which are most harmful to the heart.
  • Balanced consumption of lean animal food, chicken, fish, turkey and small, rare consumption of fatty red meat such as beef, pork.
  • Moderately balanced consumption of dairy products, mainly lean.
  • Balanced and low consumption of wine and especially red.

Nutrition And Pregnancy

Embryo development is directly related to maternal health and nutrition, both before and during pregnancy. Following hygienic Mediterranean diet habits ensure that the embryo receives all the necessary nutrients for its growth but at the same time the pregnant woman may increase her weight in a controlled manner, always according to the advice of her gynecologist.

Particular attention should be paid to the following issues:

  • Biologically the development of the fetus always has priority over the pregnant woman’s health. Therefore, a number of nutritional supplements are recommended by international organizations to reduce the risk of an error in handling nutrition.
  • A more individualized nutritional plan is necessary in special cases, such as vegetarian or strictly vegetarian women, ethnic minorities, food-allergic women, etc., where vitamin and mineral needs such as riboflavin, B12, calcium, iron, zinc may be poorly covered.
  • Some nutritional problems also occur during pregnancy, which require special dietary planning, such as a tendency for nausea or vomiting, constipation and gastroesophageal reflux.

When the long-awaited moment arrives, the environment at the hospitals Athens Medical Group ensure nutritional care with a varied menu that combines nutritionally appropriate and complete nutritional ingredients but also rich in taste, appearance and quality of materials.

We are all aware of the global advances in the field of Genetics. The complete decoding of the structure and function of the human genome is a reality. Genetics is gradually becoming an open guide to decipher many common health problems, that have a genetic basis.

Through its specialized partners Athens Medical Group offers a complete line of services in a number of fields:

  • Genetic Counceling
  • Whole Exome Sequencing
  • Reproductive Genetics
  • Non Invasive Prenatal Screening (NIPT)
  • Cancer Genetics
  • Hematological Diseases
  • Cardiogenetic Diseases
  • Neurogenetic Diseases
  • Skeletal Dysplasias
  • Preventive Genetics
  • Nutrigenetics

Sequence analysis of all known human genes (whole exome sequencing – WES), through Next Generation Sequencing technologies (NGS) is theoretically in a position to uncover the molecular basis for any genetic disorder in an affected individual, who has not been diagnosed by other available conventional
genetic testing options.

Genetic counseling is a health service that provides information and advice to patients and their families who are at risk of a hereditary genetic disorder. It is also useful to couples and prospective parents who seek more information on how to have healthy children.

Whom is it for

Genetics is highly recommended for people or couples facing one or more of the following conditions:

  • Fertility problems or recurrent miscarriages
  • Prospective parents interested in screening for the most common hereditary genetic diseases, like Thalassemia and Cystic fibrosis
  • Family history of a genetic disease, chromosomal or congenital abnormality
  • People with a positive genetic test for single gene disorders, abnormal karyotype or complex genetic conditions
